We teach a special karate program for younger children (aged 4-6) called Tiger Tots, where we teach them many of the skills needed for karate through play. They learn balance, coordination, concentration and motor skills, as well as working on basic rolls, defences and strikes. There are no examinations at this level, and it sets the children up for more formal karate training later.
The children have fun as we go for a virtual walk, seeing trees and rivers and the beach, and lots of animals. We do actions to go along with the story, and all the actions are related to karate training.
We use coloured spots and soft mats and pads so that they can train safely, but still start to learn a little about striking and defending, and quite literally how to take a fall.
The children even get to bring a small stuffed toy and a small ball to class for some of the co-ordination and balance exercises.
Even though the children are very young, they are very capable of learning in a constructive environment, and we teach them about respect for karate, for the dojo, and for each other from the beginning. We may be teaching through play, but we are still teaching karate, and we take that seriously.Discover a world of possibili
