Our karate school is called Shin-Do-Kan School of Karate, and the style of karate we teach is Shotokan. We hold sometimes hold separate beginner classes for children and adults, but sometimes teach both together. As students progress through the grades (belts), we always merge the adult and children classes, as age is not relevant to grade.
Karate teaches effective self-defence, but it also does so much more than that. It teaches self-confidence to those who need it, and humility to those who are over-confident. It teaches respect and discipline to all. It teaches philosophy and critical-thinking. And it teaches that truly worthwhile things require effort – and that it is very rewarding.
We have many different karate classes every week, with classes to suit all grades and ages. And with karate classes six days a week, there is always a class that can be attended.
We have members who have trained with us for years, and even decades, and new members are always welcome.
Karate is a fast, dynamic martial art, but we start slowly. People do not have to be fit to start classes: we will help improve fitness through the training. We teach in a very structured manner, and progress is rapid for those who train regularly. However, we maintain high standards in our dojo, so we don’t rush to push students through the belt system.
Despite the fact that we require higher standards from students, we actually bring a higher percentage of students to black belt than most dojos.
Our Instructors
Our instructors bring over 80 years of combined experience in Karate, with a deep-rooted passion and commitment to the art. Each is highly skilled in Karate, Kobudo and Tai-Chi, blending traditional techniques with modern training methods to bring out the best in every student

Looking for Karate Classes for Little Ones? (4-6 years old)
We teach a special karate program for younger children (aged 4-6) called Tiger Tots, where we teach them many of the skills needed for karate through play. They learn balance, coordination, concentration and motor skills, as well as working on basic rolls, defences and strikes. There are no examinations at this level, and it sets the children up for more formal karate training later.
