Joe…..Our Dojo Captain
I don’t know about you, but being in Joe’s presence can be intimidating. He is a 2nd Dan Black Belt, he is very particular on dojo etiquette, and has a disapproving look that could scare even the most confident of adults. But rest assured, under this hard exterior is a nice guy…..I asked Joe some questions to get to know him better !
1. What is the difference between you wearing a white belt and you wearing a black belt ?
There are obvious reasons such as increased knowledge, increased self-confidence and having a black belt attitude. The black belt attitude should happen at brown belt level so you are ready to “take” your black belt grading. I think it is also important not to forget the connection between white belt and black belt, The Beginners Mind (Shoshin). We should all be open to learn, not just for your next grading but open to learn from everyone in the dojo and life.
2. What is the most important lesson you’ve learned through your karate journey and how has it influenced your life outside of training ?
Self-Control….This is a big one for me. As a younger man, I wouldn’t have controlled my temper as I should have. This led to unnecessary verbal and sometimes physical encounters.
Perseverance….This has manifested itself in all parts of my life. The ability to keep going, knowing I’ll finish a job or if it’s a personal matter, it will improve.
Breathing….Shortly after I started training, I realized how bad my breathing was. Correct breathing is important for general health as it effects all your organs and correct breathing can help control stressful situation.
3. What would you like to improve on ?
Obvious that I’d like to improve everything, that’s not me trying to be funny. I am conscious that I can improve on everything and that means don’t stop trying.
